Plot synopsis
When Remington, a new
non-binary student at
St. Joan of Arc Academy, bumps into devoutly Catholic Jules on the first day of senior year, a forbidden romance blossoms. When cast as the leads in a school production of Romeo and Juliet, the Shakespeare play blends into real life. Will this be just another Shakespeare tragedy, or can Jules and Remington take back control of their own destiny?
Artist Statement
This film is a queer, political, and meta spin on Romeo and Juliet where actors talk to the camera, break character and continuity may be broken. The actors speak directly to the camera, allowing them to deliver their message right to the audience.
It is a campy satire of teen films, with melodramatic acting, and unrealistic dialogue. It is a film that wants you to know it is a film (and that it is low budget, as stated in the first line of the movie), there are continuity errors, there aren’t sets for the classrooms, there are unreal props (such as weapons or a joint), and you can even find some of the actor’s names in the film. This allows the viewer to reflect on the stereotypes of teen films. The title of the film even makes fun of how overdone Shakespeare tragedies are. This film is self aware.
This film was created as a protest of the “parental rights movement”, the “don’t say gay” laws, and the anti-trans movement that is currently happening. In a time of so much negativity and hatred, this film decides not to feed into that by having a twist on the ending of Romeo and Juliet to give hope to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
